Description
This is a Monarch oil nozzle with a 0.5 GPH flow rate, a 45° spray angle, and an R spray pattern. It is used in oil-fired burners and boilers to atomize fuel oil into a fine spray for combustion. The 0.5 GPH rating defines the volume of oil delivered per hour at the nozzle's rated pressure. The 45° angle sets the width of the spray cone, and the R pattern denotes a solid or semi-solid spray distribution. It is identified by SKU 0.50GPH / 45R.

Choosing and fitting
Nozzles of this type are selected by matching the flow rate, spray angle, and spray pattern to the burner's requirements, and by confirming the thread and body dimensions fit the nozzle adapter. Mounting forms vary by burner design, so the seat, thread size, and overall length must be compared with the old nozzle before ordering. The nozzle is installed finger-tight into the adapter, then tightened according to the burner maker's specification, with care not to damage the orifice or strainer.
Signs of failure
Nozzles of this kind commonly fail by orifice wear, clogging from fuel contaminants, or a damaged strainer, which changes the spray shape and flow rate. The equipment may then show a smoky flame, poor ignition, pulsation, or a rise in fuel consumption. Checking the spray pattern, the strainer, and the nozzle seat, and comparing the delivered flow rate against the rated value, helps identify a worn or blocked nozzle.
