Specifications

Description

This is a Monarch oil nozzle with a flow rate of 0.85 GPH, a 60 ° spray angle, and an R spray pattern. It is used in oil-fired burners and boilers to atomise fuel oil into a fine spray for combustion. The 0.85 GPH rating defines the volume of oil delivered per hour at the nozzle's rated pressure. The 60 ° angle sets the width of the spray cone inside the combustion chamber. The R pattern denotes a solid or semi-solid spray distribution, as distinct from hollow-cone patterns.

Choosing and fitting

Nozzles of this type are selected by matching the flow rate, spray angle, and spray pattern to the burner's requirements, and by matching the thread and body form to the nozzle adapter. Common mounting forms include male-threaded and female-threaded bodies in standard sizes, so the thread type and length must be compared with the old nozzle before ordering. The rated pressure at which the flow rate is specified must also match the pump setting, since flow varies with pressure. The spray pattern and angle must suit the combustion chamber geometry and the burner's air pattern.

Signs of failure

Nozzles of this kind commonly fail by clogging of the internal passages or the orifice, by wear that enlarges the orifice and raises flow rate, or by a distorted spray pattern from deposits or damage at the tip. On the equipment this appears as poor combustion, smoke, soot build-up, a pulsating or unstable flame, or failure to ignite. Checks include the nozzle strainer and orifice for debris, the spray pattern on a test stand, and the pump pressure against the rated value.
