Description

The Monarch Oil nozzle 4.50GPH / 80PLP is an oil burner nozzle with a flow rate of 4.5 GPH, a spray angle of 80 °, and a PLP spray pattern. It meters and atomises fuel oil for combustion in an oil-fired burner. The 80 ° spray angle defines the cone width of the oil mist leaving the orifice. The PLP spray pattern describes the distribution of that mist. The 4.5 GPH flow rate states the volume of oil the nozzle passes per hour at its rated pressure.

Choosing and fitting

Nozzles of this type are selected by matching the flow rate, spray angle, and spray pattern to the burner's requirements, and by matching the thread and body form to the nozzle adapter. Mounting forms differ between nozzle families, so the thread size and seating face must be compared with the old part before ordering. The rated flow rate is stated at a specific pump pressure, so the pressure at the nozzle must match the value the rating is based on. The spray pattern and angle must suit the combustion head and firing chamber geometry.

Signs of failure

Nozzles of this type commonly fail by orifice wear, which increases flow rate, or by clogging and coking, which reduces or distorts the spray. The equipment may then show a smoky flame, poor ignition, pulsation, or a rise in flue gas temperature. A worn or blocked nozzle can also cause erratic combustion and soot deposits on the combustion head. Checking the spray shape, the flow rate, and the strainer, and comparing the nozzle with the burner specification, is the usual diagnostic step.
