Specifications

Description

This is a Danfoss oil nozzle with a flow rate of 12 GPH, a spray angle of 80°, and a spray pattern of B. It is used to atomise fuel oil in a burner, producing a cone-shaped spray that mixes with combustion air. The 80° angle defines the width of the spray cone, and the B pattern denotes the distribution of fuel within that cone. The 12 GPH rating states the volume of oil the nozzle passes per hour at its rated pressure.

Choosing and fitting

Nozzles of this type are selected by matching the flow rate, spray angle, and spray pattern to the burner manufacturer's specification, and by confirming the thread and seat form fit the nozzle holder. Mounting forms differ mainly in thread size and in whether the nozzle seals on a flat face or a taper, so the holder and the old nozzle must be compared before ordering. The rated pressure of the pump also has to match the pressure at which the flow rate is specified, since the same nozzle passes a different volume at a different pressure.

Signs of failure

Nozzles of this kind commonly fail by clogging of the internal filter or the orifice, by wear that enlarges the orifice and raises the flow rate, or by a distorted spray pattern from deposits on the tip. On the equipment this shows as a smoky flame, unstable or pulsating combustion, difficulty igniting, or soot building up on the boiler surfaces. Checking involves inspecting the spray cone, comparing the nozzle against the burner specification, and replacing it when the pattern is uneven or the flow no longer matches the rating.
