Choosing and fitting

Nozzles of this type are selected by matching the flow rate, spray angle and spray pattern to the burner and combustion chamber, and by matching the thread and seat to the nozzle holder. Mounting forms differ by body shape and by the sealing face, so the old nozzle is compared with the replacement before ordering. The nozzle is fitted with the correct wrench on the flats, without touching the orifice, and the holder is checked for a clean seat and a sound gasket.

Signs of failure

Nozzles of this type usually fail by orifice wear, which raises the flow rate, or by clogging and coking, which distorts the spray. The equipment then shows a smoky flame, soot on the boiler surfaces, a rough or pulsating fire, or failure to ignite. Check the spray pattern on a test stand, the pump pressure and the filter before replacing the nozzle.
